Lichter dan lucht, los van de aarde
Before the very first motorized plane took off in the Netherlands, the Dutch tried to get off the ground for more than a century, using lighter-than-air aircrafts: balloons and airships. The book ‘Lichter dan lucht, los van de aarde’ (Lighter than air, free of the earth) describes (in Dutch language) in detail in 300 pages this impressive but nevertheless largely unknown episode of Dutch aviation history, from the year 1783 to present.

The book is about dreaming romantics who were lured by blue skies and the desire to watch mother earth from above. It’s about the perseverance and determination of Dutch inventors and adventurers who succeeded in defeating gravity. And it’s about passionate persistents who introduced, organized and popularized ballooning in the Netherlands, with the result that these days the blue Dutch skies are regularly enriched with impressive hot air balloons. In addition to historiography, the book also contains background information about the current practice of ballooning.

This luxuriously executed, hard-cover and full-colour reference work contains over 400 (previously mostly unpublished) historical images.
